My favourite TV & Movie Soundtracks

Anyone who knows me well knows that I don’t really know a lot about music, with one exception.

I love TV & Movie soundtracks.

I hereby present to you a small selection of some of my favourites.

Star Trek
Now, I realise this encompasses quite a large selection. From the first time we hear the theme of The Motion Picture, to the many different episodic soundtracks by Dennis McCarthy, Ron Jones, and Jay Chattaway, there are hundreds of hours of music to listen to and enjoy. “The Ron Jones Project” is a wonderful set, containing every score (with the exception of those already released) that Ron wrote before he was told his music wasn’t suitable for the later seasons of TNG.

Back to the Future
The scores for the Back to the Future films always make me smile. The anthem played when the DeLorean travels through time in fabulous, and although the soundtrack for Back to the Future 2 is basically an extension on the themes used in the first movie, the Western themes in Back to the Future 3 are excellent. Alan Silvestri takes some cues from the music he created for 1 & 2, but there is also a good selection of brand new tracks, the best of which I consider to be “Indians!” and the entire section of “The Train” when they push the DeLorean up to 88mph.

Ghostbusters
Now, I’m not talking about the Ray Parker Jr hit here, awesome as it may be. Elmer Berstein’s score for GhostBusters is often overlooked, but it really adds to the atmosphere of the film. Some of my favourite tracks are the “Library” music played at the beginning, “Plan”, and “Sign”.
Ghostbusters 2 is probably worth a listen as well, by Randy Edelman, however for me it doesn’t capture the magic (or ghosts!) of the original.

Human Target
The music for season one of Human Target was some of the best music ever written for a TV Series. Bear McCreary managed to make each episode feel like a full Hollywood action adventure movie. From the first time I heard the opening theme, I knew I was going to love the show. And I did, until a change of creative director for season two meant Bear no longer had any place on the show, and the music went to being the same as most other TV shows. A real shame.

Shrek
A real fantastic joy ride from start to finish. From the love themes to the action music played when Shrek and Donkey escape the Dragon with the Princess, this album is full of fantastic music. Harry Gregson-Williams creates a fantastic journey through the world that Shrek inhabits, and shows he can turn his hand to any kind of style required. “Donkey meets Shrek” and “Escape from the Dragon” are probably my favourites here.

Tron: Legacy
A fabulous mix of electronic and orchestral sounds by Daft Punk, this soundtrack gets fabulous reviews, and it’s easy to see why. Although the film itself is a little weak (much to my disappointment, having very fond memories of the original) the music manages to draw you in to the virtual world, some of my favourite tracks being “Overture”, “Outlands” and “Flynn Lives”.

Independence Day
David Arnold at his finest. I can’t convey how much I enjoy listening to the music from this movie, whenever I hear it I can vividly recall the scenes and they play through in my mind with the music blasting, usually from my car stereo. From the music playing when our heroes visit “Area 51″, to the fabulous selection of tracks at the end of the film as “David Gets An Idea”, they distribute the plan throughout the world in “International Code”, and then the finale as they fight the invaders in “The Day We Fight Back” and “Jolly Roger”. Without a doubt my favourite score.

There are many others I enjoy the odd track from, including Airforce One, Apollo 13, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1, The Fifth Element, Galaxy Quest, Superman and of course Star Wars. I couldn’t write about them all though, and it was tough to narrow it down to the few mentioned about.

If anyone wants to tweet me their opinions, feel free, I’d love to hear other peoples favourites, you can find me as @qbie

Thanks for reading!

Ooops.. I missed some photos..

I forgot to blog about some photos I’ve uploaded in the last few months/weeks, and also today I finally got around to uploading a video to YouTube.

In September I went with my friend Chris to the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, so you can see some pictures of that on the gallery as usual. I also made a short video, I actually did a lot more shots with my 550D trying out different things with focusing, but I’m having trouble stabilising them in After Effects so I’ve left them out. Maybe I’ll revisit it in the future when I’ve had some more practice. I wish my Canon 50mm f/1.8 was stabilised.

I also visited the Autosport show in Birmingham in January, so here are the pictures for that.

HP Microserver.. or “The Cube”

Well, thanks to my Dad, the HP Microserver is now called “The Cube”.

It arrived yesterday afternoon, and I’ve spent the last day and a half setting it up, and having a little experiment. After flashing the BIOS to enable AHCI on the 5th SATA port I mounted a 2TB HDD in the 5.25″ bay. I then installed Debian “Squeeze” on it – I’ve allocated about 10GB for /, 50GB for /home, and the rest for data.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the HDDs from my old QNAP were standard EXT3, so I was able to mount them with no trouble. Samba was a doddle to configure, and I updated it to a newer version thanks to the backports repo (First 3.5.11 – then 2 hours later 3.6.3 appeared).

Once I had all the drives in I moved all my data around a bit as I’d gained ~1.9TB of space, so I now have TV shows separated into “Current” and “Archived” – basically anything that’s old or been cancelled/ended goes in the archive. This was primarily because Dad was moaning there were too many shows for him to scroll through ;-)

After that, I installed SABnzbd and Sick Beard to automate my TV show downloads. It did a great job of scanning what I’d already downloaded, it even made me realise there was an episode or two here and there that I’d missed.

So, it’s been an interesting weekend, and I’ve re-familiarised myself with some things I’d long forgotten. Now I have to change the setup in Media Browser on the Media Centre PC downstairs and rescan the new share locations, but that’s easy enough. I’ll also try to setup sharing the printer through it as well, but that can wait until next weekend.

Ta-ta for now.
